LOCAL PRICE OF BUTTER.
Sir, —It has been interesting to read the varying opinions on the butter price question, and it seems plain to t.lio ordinary thinking individual that the fixation of the local price must be wrong in principle. Mr. Leeson quoted some figures recentiv. but he seems to have-quite overlooked the fact that in those figures ho provided nothing for the retailer, but concluded that tho producer would g<>t the full price he advocated. -Apart altogether from that, if wo can supply butter for local consumption at In per lb. shall, at least, be adding an important item to the reduction of the Dominion's cost of living and we may reasonably look for a similar reduction in other items. The local cost of wheat is a case in point. The whole Dominion is suffering from the inflated price of wheat to maintain the production cost for a comparatively few Dominion v. heatgrowers. It would be suicidal to multiply i>uch instances by bolstering the price of butter. Much belter and far more practical to work for and urge the reduction of the price of •wheat to the world's parity and so reduce the price of flour and all its manufactured products. The lower we can reduce the cost of the necessities of life the easier it will bo for all of us. H. M. Dxdsburv.
Sir,—l noted with interest- the sensible article written by Mr Alexander. I think it high time those who are responsible for selling our butter belovr cost were dispensed with, and a. new membership formed of citizens who have expressed their willingness to pay a fair price, viz., Is 6d a lb. Most farmers have not a lazy bone in their bodies. They certainly have a bee in their bonnets in accepting the present conditions without seeking a remedy, and pulling together as one man. Prosperity for the farmer means prosperity for the city. Doing away with the farmers' small profits is the forerunner of the city's downfall. J. CARRUTinins.
