HIGHER RAILWAY RATES.

COALOWNERS AND MINISTER. CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. Increased railway freight charges were the subject of a conference to-day between Iho coulminp owners and the of Railways, Hon. W. A. Veitrh. In a statement made subsequently Mr. Veitch said tho principal mining interests were represented at (lie conference. Each stated the position from his own point of view. Ho had hoped it would bo possible for the owners to como to somo agreement and make a unanimous recommendation. Ho had found, howover, that owing to tho varying interests among tho mine owners tlioy were not ablo to reach a unanimous decision. Nevertheless, tho mine owners gavo the Minister some valuable arid useful information and tho consideration of this would enable him to make some adjustments for tho benofit of all parties. Ho would confer with tho officers of the Railways Department and, in the light of the information acquired he would reach finality as soon as possible. Ho very much' regretted that it had been necessary to increase tho railway charges at all, but as tho slop had been essential ho would do his best to make the burden as light as possible by applying tho increases in such a way, that they would impose tho least possiblo disability on industry.
