FIFTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.
The following are extracts from Ilia New Zealand Herald of November IS, 1880: A memorial has been largely signed bv residents and business people in Queen Street praying the City Council ,to fill up the hollow on the west side of Upper Queen Street so as to enable a pavement to be made from top to bottom of the street. This would be a great improvement and would cost but little. Since the opening of the WhangareiKamo railway the coal trade at. Whangarei has been quite brisk. The Kamo coal when used for steaming purposes requires different treatment to Bay or Newcastle coal. Instead of being heaped on, only a comparatively small quantity should he put in the furnace at once. By this means a fine glowing firo is obtained and fuel economised. The following memorial was yesterday forwarded by tne Committee of the Auckland Scripture Gift Association to tha Minister of Education, the Hon. William Rolleston:—"The members of the association respectively requesi, that permission may be granted to the school committees of "this province and this colony to allow copies of The Ten Commandments and The Lord's Prayer, printed in a fullsized type (subject to approval), to be exhibited permanently on the walls of tha public schools by this association. The members aro convinced that this action would meet with the full approbation of parents in general, and in some degree also lessen the reproach of ' godless' which attaches to the present educational system." The memorial was signed by the following members:—Messrs. J. 0. Firtb, Frederick Larkins. T. Macfarlaae, jjp, Kenderdioa end Colonel HauJtain.
