FIFTY YEARS AGO.

I EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of November 17, 1880: A shipment of Wellington butter has been sent to London, costing when delivered there 7d a pound, which should leave a splendid margin of profit. The acting-Mayor calls upon citizens to make a half-holiday upon the occasion of the arrival of the new Governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, and also expresses a wish that the line of route chosen by the viceregal party to Government House should be decorated by flags. Three guns will be fired before the landing of His Excellency and citizens who hear the guns fired may then begin putting up the bunting they possess. Flags hoisted will probably be seen when the guns would not be heard, and this will enable those living in the suburbs to know that His Excellency is about to land.

The fortnightly meeting of the Harbour Board was held yesterday. It was resolved that the engineer should confer with the city surveyor with a view to improving the drainage in Fieeman's Bay. A letter received from the Hon. Mr. Brassey, Civil Lord of the Admiralty, was read. The secretary was instructed to forward to Mr. Brassey every information that might be deemed desirable as to the capacity and resources of the Auckland Harbour as a coaling-station for the BriTish Navy. Mr. Wad del moved, and it was carried : " That the Government be informed 1 hat the Harbour Boaid cannot conveniently execute the work of constructing baths on the foreshore of Hardinge Street, and. as such baths are required for the use, benefit and convenience of the public of Auckland, the City Council be authorised to proceed wnh the work under the provisions of section 152 of the Harbour Act, 1878."
