OFFENCES BY DRIVER.
LORRY STRIKES MOTOR-CAR. FINED FOR NEGLIGENCE. [by TKf.EGUArir. —OWN CORIIESPONDENT.] PUTARURU, Thursday. A collision between ft motor-car containing Auckland business men and a lorry, near Tapapa school, on tho Auek-land-Rotorna Road, last month, had its sequel in the Magistrate's Court in Putaruru to-day, before Mr. S. L. Patterson, S.M., when Norman Clark, lorry driver for Griffin and Young, contractors, was charged with negligent driving, failing to keep on his proper side of the road, and refusing to give his name. Accused, who was represented by Mr. G. G. Bell, pleaded not guilty to the first two charges, arul guilty to the third. L. .T. Williamson, customs officer, Auckland, gave evidenco to the effect that while proceeding to Rotorua, and near Tapapa school, a collision occurred between accused's lorry and his car. Witness noticed the lorry approaching at an excesstvo speed. Owing to the speed the driver had little control and crashed into his car, which was extensively damaged. Mr. V. N. Hubble, solicitor, of Auckland, a passenger in the car, corroborated tho evidence of the previous witness. Defendant said ho noticed Williamson's car approaching him on the wrong sido of the road, and as ho appeared to bo cutting tho corner, ho (Clark) put on both ! brake? and pulled up quickly. He, contended that tho car hit his lorry after it had been stopped. Tho magistrate said there was not tho slightest doubt that defendant's version was impossible. Accused was fined £3 and Court costs on the first charge. Tin was convicted on the other charges and ordered to pay costs and witnesses' expenses, £lO 2s.
