HERALD'S SPECIAL FORECAST, SQUALLY WITH SHOWERS. * Tlic following weather forecast for 24 hours from 7 a.m. to-day was supplied oy Mr. 11. M. Vincent last evening;—, The southern Tasman Sea, and practically the whole of the area between Tasmania and beyond Chatham Islands, is again under the influence of a very extensive and energetic westerly storm area. This typo of depression has been a marked feature of the conditions ruling during (he present spring, and it is many years since such a prolonged spell of westerly weather was experienced over the Dominion. The general outlook indicates boisterous, wintry weather, with heavy showers in most districts, particularly in western areas. Hail and thunder probable in places near the west coast, while there is a probability of some snow on the southern highlands. .Still mainly fair to fine in east coaut districts, with mild temperatures, but colder temperatures ruling in mcjst other districts. Westerly to south-westerly winds, strong to gale, de« creasing. Hough seas on the west coast, especially southward from Cape Egrnont ami rough in the Bay of Plenty. Local outlook: Squally, with heavy showers, and colder, although fair intervals intervening. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 29.70 in. Midnight, Wednesday 29.75 in! The Govornment meteorologist reported last evening as follows .--—Yesterday's depression, which had deepened considerably, has crossed the Dominion to-day, but another and a deeper one now centred near Tasmania is following it closely. Indications are for west to south-west winds, but veering again shortly to northerlies, moderate to strong at first, but northerly gales probable at exposed positions within 24 hours. Seas rough on west coast and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, elsewhere moderate. Moderate to strong south-west to westerly winds in the eastern Tasman, veering gradually to northerlies and freshening to gale force; seas becoming rough to heavy. Weather improving temporarily but a renewal of . unsettled conditions' shortly from the westward; general rain probable within 24 to 36 hours, with some heavy falls.
