LORD PASSFI ELD SPEAKS. TALK WITH SIR C. CLEMENTI. British Wireless. RUGBY, August 28. Sir Cecil Clementi, Governor of the Straits Settlements, who is paving a visit to the Dutch East Indian Government. spoke by telephone from Java to Lord Passfield, Secretary nf State for the Colonies, at the Colonial Oflico this afternoon.

This is tho first time that a Colonial Secretary has communicated with the par East by telephone from the Colonial Office, although the former Secretary of State for the Dominions, .Mr. L. S. Amerv, while at the House of Commons spoke to Mr. Onnsby Gore, then Colonial Under-Secretary, when he was in Java two years ago. Lord Passfield expressed appreciation of the opportunity given to him by tho Dutch Indian Government. He remarked that the Empires of the Netherlands and of Britain had many similar problems and many grounds for cooperation in the East, and ho welcomed the invitation to Sir Cecil dementi to visit the. Governor-General of Java. He hoped that future years might .see further mutual understanding between tho Dutch and British authorities overseas. Sir Cecil said ho had had a wonderful reception in Java, and had been much struck by the, remarkable developments there.
