WAIKATO CLUB'S AFFAIRS

SATISFACTORY YEAR'S WORK

EFFECTS OF TAXATION

FrV TET.EC.IUrH. —OWN* COKUKSPONDKNT, HAMILTON", Friday.

Tho annual meeting of tho Waikato Racing Club was held to-day, the president. Mr. O. W. Vercoe, presiding. In moving the adoption of tho report and balance-sheet, the president referred to the satisfactory year experienced by the club. Tho accounts revealed a not profit of £7'25 after providing for depreciation amounting to £705, and bad debts, £IOO. This was tho best result tho club had obtnined since purchasing the new course at To Rapa.

The committee would have to watch expenditure carefully in tho future as tho additional taxation of per cent, imposed by the Government on tho totalisntor turnover might have a tendency to curtail investments, continued Mr. Vercoe. "While tho additional impesition would make it harder for clubs to carry on successfully, ho could not see how they could reasonably expect to cscapo tho burden. They should shoulder thoir responsibility in common with other taxpayers. Mr. Vercoe thought the time had arrived when those in control of the sport should consider the advisability of tho amalgamation of some clubs in view of tho new conditions.

For tho oomiiic season tho club had been granted Saturday and Monday, November 15 and 17, for the spring meeting, nnd Saturday and Monday, April 18 and 20, for the* autumn meeting. Mr. Vercoo hoped that, given fine weather, another successful year would bo experienced. Mr. S. V. Tyler commented on the fact that tho decision to curtail tlio issue of complimentary tickets had resulted in nn increase in tho gale takings, and expressed the view that tho step was justified. Tho following six members were oleoled to tho committee:—Messrs. H. D. Caro. \V. T. C. Christie, O. M. Monckton, G. J. Peach. ,T. rVaser Smith and S. V. Tyler. In returning thanks for the support accorded him during tho year. Mr. Vercoe snid the outlook for racing in tho Dominion was not particularly bright. He predioted that in 10 yours tho club would be one of tho leading bodies in the country, exclusive of metropolitan clubs They had a course which had justified tho expenditure on it and which had beon favourably commented upon by horse owners from both insido and outside the province. Tho buildings were not what the club would like, but tho club was not .yet in the position to expend substantial money on better buildings. rTe hoped that tho timo was not far distant when buildings would be erected in keeping with the importance of tho club and tho district. A LONG ASSOCIATION. By the death of Sir Georgo Hunter the long business association between that sportsman and his trainer, R. Gooseman, was severed. Gooseman had trained horses for Sir Georce over the lengthy period of 41 year*.
