WELLINGTON NOTES.

FORM AT DANNEVIRKE. MEW ZEALAND CUP HORSES. SHREWD NOW AT HIS BEST. [BY TKLEGRAPH. —OWN COll RESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Friday. Seven New Zealand Cup candidates. Royal Game, Black Mint, Shrewd. Uynanna, Courageous, Blimp and My Own, wero seen in action at Dannevirke. Shrewd performed the best and at present is at tho top of his form. Courageous on his form is not out of place in a stayers' race, but Royal Game, Black Mint and Blimp cannot be senoustv regarded for tho two-milo event. My Own ian a fair raco and so did Ityuanna, but it is too early as far as they aro concerned to form an opinion upon their prospect*.

Desert Lad was one of tho nnluckiest runners at the Dannevirko meeting and had moro than his share of misfortune on both days.

Maui always was n good little galloper, but he has improved u lot and might will a good handicap.

Call Again is a useful hurdler, who, with luck, might liavo won a double at Dannevirke.

I\ahikatoa. was a useful two-year-old, winning twice and running socond once in 12 starts. Ho failed to run on the first day at Dannevirke, but thero was nothing wrong with him tho second day. He is a halfbrother to Iluikai and while ho may not reach the top class among the three-year-olds, ho will win Ilia share. Most Promising Jumper. One of tho most promising jumpers of tho campaign that is now drawing to its close is Postman. 110 mado his first public appearance just a month ago at tho Awapuni winter meeting and sinco then has won four races. His win in the Hunt Cup Steeples at Dannevirko was easily accomplished and ho looks liko bcirig very useful over tho fences next winter. Ho i 3 only a five-year-old, so that ho has all his best years in front of him.

J. Proctor is (loins well with his email team at Foxton. 110 recently produced a transformed character in Disrank and won a hurdlo double ut the Awapuni winter meeting, At Daimcvirko he scored another double with Maui. Tho improvement in this pair does not end tho stable story, for Balloon has shared in it, and it was sheer bad luck that robbed him of a portion of tho prize-money on Thursday. Incidentally Disrank, who was unable to Btart at tho Grand National meeting, is now making a rapid recovery from n temporury ailment. Tho principal disappointment among tho racehorses at the Dannevirko meeting was Simba. lie commenced his racing career 12 months ago with a flourish of trumpets, winning the Debutant Stakes at Wanganui, the Nursery TTandicap at tho Hawke's Ray spring meeting, and running third in tho Wellesley Stakes at Trentliam. Tlis form mado him favourite for the latter event, but ho was decisively beaten by both Watch Officer and Chrysology. Simba Again Disappointing.

As ho had beaten Chrysology at Hastings when conceding 10lb., the running in tho Wejlesley Stakes mado it clear that Simba had gone off. This was amply proved when he failed to gain a place in tho Roseneath Handicap on tho second day at Wellington, won by Gesture from Chief Link and Green Linnet. Siniba was not tried again until December, when he ran unplaced in the Oroua Nursery at Feilding, Lady l'am winning from Cylinder and Arisus. That was his last start prior to Wednesday, and seeing that ho had been given such a long time to recover his form » good race was anticipated from him in what was inoderato' hack company. After showing speed for half a milo Simba retired from tho picture and finished well back. All things considered it was a disappointing performance. A three-year-old who did not fail to show pood form at Dannevirko wns Mr. V. Riddiford's Lineage. She ran in tho open seven-furlong event won by Maui, in which she finished a good fourth and with luck in running would have been second. Maui scpred again on tli" second day, so the form is right and Lineage's prospects in tho near future look distinctly promising. Her next start will be in the Wanganui Guineas. OTAGO HUNT RACES.
