LIABILITY FOR RATES.
Sir, [ notice in your issue of August 27 reference to flip recent, ,Supreme, Court decision in regard (o local authorities lights under the, Bating Act to enforce the recovery of overdue rates in respect to property mortgaged to the Crown. It, is apparently the intention of local authorities in the .Auckland district and elsewhere to take full advantage of the recent decision. My object in writing is to draw attention to the fact, and which no doubt is not knovn to the local authorities in your province, that the decision above: referred to has been obtained by the Inglewood Borough Council alone and that other local bodies have not in any way assisted ".hat, body in having the vexed question decided. .Application was made to the Municipal Association and to the Counties Association for backing to enable a proper decision on questions to be give:i. The Municipal Association flatly refused to assist the Inglewood Council and :.n fact in no way did assist, Members of local bodies particularly will appreciate (now if not hetore) the importance of the decision, and I would suggest, with duo respect, that they see to it that the Inglewood Council (representing crily a verv small community) will have some recognition in the nature of assistance, from other local bodies, either through the Municipal Association or otherwise, toward the cost "f obtaining a decision which clearly will be of immense value to all local authorities. I would Mention that 1 am nut a member of the inglewood Council X.Y.Z.
