SETTLING IMMIGRANTS.

OVERSEAS LEAGUE INTEREST.

DECISION TO CO-OPERATE

A j decision to actively associate itself with the questions of migration and land settlement was made at a recent meeting of the executive committee of the Auckland, branch of tho Overseas League. The findings of a sub-committee which considered the matter were submitted by Mr. N. G. Gribble. He said that the comAiitteo favoured bringing migration into strict relation to development and at the "present time encouraging only those with means to migrate. It was considered unsatisfactory that the matter should be loft entirely in the hands of the State and co-operation between the league and other organisations was urged. The committee also urged that a. scheme bo devised to care for young immigrant settlers who, having served their apprenticeship, were seeking an opportunity of proprietorship. The calling of a conference in London of representatives from various parts of the Empire was suggested. Tho chairman, Mr. F. E. de Guerrier, said it would be advisablo to notify the New Zealand headquarters of the local proposals and to call a meeting of branches of the league throughout New Zealand, after which the whole subject could be adequately represented in London. It was considered desirable that the league should work with the Land Settlement and Development League, the former undertaking the part of securing and of transferring immigrants and the latter caring for their actual settlement. The report of tho committee was adopted and it was decided to hold a Dominion conference of league branches in Auckland on September 16. Mr. J. Rf./Melville was appointed to represent the league on the executive committeo of the Land Settlement and Development League. / ' ==========
