HISTORY IN PICTURES. To present to tho reader a complete pictorial history of music is the object of a valuable and artistic hook recently published by Messrs. Dent. Its title, " A History of Music in Pictures," is particularly, appropriate, for its 1500 illustrations range from the early Babylonian and Assyrian periods to the present day, and afford striking evidence of tho progress of musical culture through the passago of the centuries. Tho illustrations are classified in a way which makes for clarity and convenient and each pago carries concise but thoroughly practical notes. Although a work, which from its nature is specially valuable in a musical library or reference collection, tho book will make a valuable addition to the home collection. " Celebrated Musicians, Past and Present," is tho title of a book compiled by Hubert Whelbourn, which presents in an attractive and readable form, tho chief facts in tho lives of the better-known musicians. , Tho names aro arranged for the sake of handy reference in alphabetical order, and the space dovoted to each is according to his importance in tho history of music.
