The diary states that .thesa men left tho steamer in a small boat just before the explosion. Two of tlienl, were picked up bv a foreign vessel. It; earnfully salvaged the wreckage to remove all trace of the disaster. The Navy Department is impressed with the diary, which is a carefully kept record, but doubts are expressed about several points in the story. The diary was sent to tho Department by a former Marino Corps sergeant with all excellent service record. It is noli explained how it came into his possession
