CLIENTS' MONEY STOLEN.
SOLICITOR SENT TO GAOL. SUM OF £6OO INVOLVED. [by telegraph.—feess association.] GISDORNE, Friday. "I recognise that the severest part of the punishment will be that you will be removed from thp roll of solicitors, but that is not sufficient, and it is my duty to impose a term of imprisonment," said Mr. Justice Reed to-day, when Robert George Gardiner Bain, aged 26. barrister and solicitor, appeared before him in the Supreme Court for sentence for theft by fraud. His Honor said the punishment must be such as would act as a deterrent to others against interfering with their clients' money, and ho ordered that Bain bo detained for reformative purposes for 12 months.
Bain had pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to 20 charges of fraudulently omitting to account for moneys received, thereby committing theft. Tho total amount of tha defalcations was approximately ,€6OO.
