CIVIL WAR IN CHINA.
CHECK FOR NORTHERNERS. NATIONALISTS STRONGER. OPTIMISM DEPRECATED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (.Received August 18, 8.15 p.m.) SHANGHAI, August 18. Tho Shansi forces liavo evacuated tho province of Shantung as a result of the fall of Tsinan. The Nanking (Nationalist) Government consequently claims that tho Northerners are leaving Lanfeng (200 miles south-west of Tsinan), which they have held through the whole campaign, and that they intend to retire along the Lunghai front. If this bo true it is expected that tho Northerners will yield Ilaifeng and Changchow and make a stand further south. The President, Chiang Kai-shek,' has strongly reinforced the Southern troops, tho removal of whom led to the recent Communist risings iu tho provinces of Kiangsi and Hunan. With 12 tanks purchased in Britain Chang undoubtedly is in a superior position to that of tho Kuominchun army, which has been badly depleted of effectives and material. It is generally believed, however, that the Nanking Government is too optimistic and that there is much to do before tho Northerners accept its terms.
