DANGEROUS DRIVING CASE.

SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT

DEFECTIVE BRAKES ON VAN

An accident on the Great Xoulli Road at Papakura had a sequel in (lie Papakura ; Police Court yesterday, Frederick Albeit Keating being charged with driving a motor-van in a dangerous manner and with using the vehicle while flic brakes were inefficient. Defendant did not appear. Evidence was given that four adults were going home after a picturo enter tninment at Papakura on the evening in question, and a lady in the party was wheeling an infant in a perambulator. They were walking by the edgo of the concrete near the monument. A motor van driven by defendant overtook them, struck tho perambulator, precipitated the child on to the side of the road, and pushed a young man over on to the concrete, with tho result that lie sustained a cut in his head which necessitated stitches and confined him to his home for 12 days. When tested, the brakes on the van proved to bo practically useless. Defendant was fined £5 and costs, £2 16s, on the first charge and was ordered to pay costs, 10s, on tho second.
