NAVAL STOKER'S DEATH.

BODY FOUND IN HARBOUR. ACCIDENTAL OCCURRENCE. The body of Svlvanus John Pongelly, loading stoker on the sloop Laburnum, who fell overboard from the ferry steamor Makoni near the Devonport wharf on Friday evening, was recovered from the harbour near the wharf yesterday morning, and an inquest >vas hold in the afternoon by iSlr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner. Deceased, who was ugod 29 and single, is not known to have any relatives in Now Zealand.

After evidence of identification had been given, the mate of the.-Makora,"Law-rence Clark, stated that as the vessel was approaching the Devonpovt Wlnirf on the 8 p.m. trip from .city on Friday evening ho saw deceased go on the upper deck. As witness was about to man the mooring lin«s ho heard a splash and then saw a man in naval uniform in the water. Tho Mukora's engines were reversed and a lifeboat was launched, a search of tho locality being made for 20 minutes. It was possible that deceased might have struck the side of the vessel in his fall. •

Tho coroner returned a verdict of. accidental drowning, remarking that there was iio evidence of foul play or any intention to commit suicide. '
