MAN'S LEAP TO DEATH.
GRAFTON BRIDGE FATALITY.
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST.
"A verdict of suicide While of unsound mind was returned by the coroner, Mr. F. K: Hunt, S.M., at the inquest yesterday into the death of Llewellyn Mayson, who jumped from Grafton Bridge shortly before noon on Tuesday and died an hour later in the Auckland Hospital. Thomas William Mayson, draper, residing at Heme Bay, brother of deceased, said that deceased, who was aged 52, was married, his wife residing at'l, Rocklands Avenue, .Mount Eden. Deceased, who was a native of Wales, had been in New Zealand for about 15 years and, had been employed as a battery-hand and labourer at Ivarangahake, near Waihi, until three months ago, when lie suffered a nervous breakdown. After receiving treatment at the * Thames Hospital deceased was a patient'at the mental hospital at Tokanui-until, his-discharge , on January 26, when he came to Auckland, to join his wife and sister-in-law. Witness last saw his brother in his oflice on Monday afternoon and deceased then gave no 'indication that ho was about to take his life. Prior to his committal to the mental hospital he had shown suicidal tendencies, but ho had made no previous attempt to take his life, . " The only reason that I can advance for his act is that deceased had a nervous attack and suddenly lost his reason," witness added.
Mabel Clark, sister-in-law of deceased, stated that he had resided with her since January 26. He had been in good spirits, and had never spoken of taking his life. When he left home about 8.30 on Tuesday morning, after saying that ho was going to town, he appeared quite normal.
Two bystanders on the bridge, M. P. Brynes, university student, and E. J. C. Thomas, hairdresser, said that theism*- deceased climbing the parapet at a lamp standard. Owing to his deliberation they took little notico of him, thinking that he-was a workman engagod in repairs. The coroner then returned the verdict as stated. ! -
