THE KING'S CUP.

NEXT CONTEST IN ADELAIDE.

- 1 "- BY PHAETON.

- The King's Cup is uu event of the Australian.turf that is invested with an especial -interest, as it well might be, for His Majesty donates the trophy in the ehape cf a hancteam« gold cup. Victoria, Nefr -'South Wales and Queensland have each in turn been tho scene of contests for the

coveted prize, aud this year South Australia is to have the distinction of provid-j-riug the race, which is fixed to be run at on May 17. The stake value of the King's Cup ha 3 heen fixed by the t committeo of the South. Australian Jockey -Club at £IOOO, and under the conditions

.framed at a conference of tho premier racking clubs of the Commonwealth the distance . .of the race will be a mile and a-balf. The " maximum weight will be 9.5, and the miniv' mum 7.0. As was the case in the other " States where tho King's Cup has been al-:v-ieady run» starters will "not be called on to ". carry any penalty for any successes gained *fter the declaration of weights".

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES.

FIVE-YEAR-OLD SHREWD.

At Ellerslie on Boxing Day lest, when

the Auckland Cup was "under discussion, j. some people were found expounding Ibe of Shrewd to consideration. : -fho , r King Mark gel.ding" had wdtt the Napier " Park Stakes in the early spring and his ""second to Rabbi .in the Feilding Jubilee . Cup was held to be a. creditable performance. However, Shrewd was unable to', secure a place-in .the big race at Ellerslie, but he could still be given credit for run- •""" ning a good race, for he finished fourth. Shrewd figures in the' Taranaki Cup with ■ 7.2 i so that in- the matter of poundage he is .nicely weighted if' ho can stay out a mile and a-half.

ENGLISH-BRED DOLOMITE. When Dolomite won tho Otaio Plato at " the Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meet;i "ing in November last" matters 'pointed to ' . his adding to his score-at short notice, for he was credited. ..with covering the mile ; #nd a-ijuarter attached to the race which • he won in 2m " 5 <t-ss, * but a perusal of the records in the.interval reveals that he'his figured with the -.unplaced - division in i ight successive races." Dolomite..figures in the Okato Hack 'Handicap to be run at the Taranaki meeting-'fo.dayi and, as tie is Btated to be well forward in condition, he ./' ■may be able 3 t0.. reproduce the form '.oat - landed him "a winner at RiccaTton in the epring. J

THOLOMON AT PERTH. The Solferino—Li»P gelding Tholomon. wh<> was raced irr New Zealand by Mr. R. Acton-Adams . and who was transported to "Western Australia last year, bag managed to win a couple "of races at Perth meetings, fiut I] 6 has yet to register a victory in keeping with his high breeding.

THE JUMPING DIVISION. V The- Ohinfemuri Jockey Club has always -fceen found catering for the jumping _v division, and a peru3Rl of the programme J. issued in connection with the forthcoming 1,, meeting at Paeroa shows that £BOO is allotted to • four events—two hurdle races • and a similar number of steeplechases—- ... respectively carrying a stake of £2OO,

LIMERICK'S FULL-BROTHER. Dunraven, the two-year-old full-brother to S" Limerick, is reported to bo progressing nicely in his preparation' at Riccarton, and. recording to advice 3 to hand, he is expected to figure among the contestants for tho Dunedin Champagne Stakes, which fvent comes up for decision at Wingatui on t» e • 13th inst. A scale of penalties is attached to the D.J.C. Champagne Stakes, but Dunraven is included with the unpcnali3ed ' division. In the autumn of 1923 Limerick ' registered his initial victory in the Champagne Stakes at Wingatui, and it will b e interesting, to note if Duitravcn has a iimilor record.

WATKATO AUTUMN MEETING. The Waikato Racing Club's Autumn Meeting has been fixed to be held on Saturday and Monday, April 12 and 11. The nurn/allotted in prize-money in connection with the approaching gathering nt Te Rnpa amounts to .€3400, the Storey Memorial Cup (li miles) of £6OO being the leading event, Jj VETERAN YOMA. Yoma, who figures among tho acceptances for the Taranaki Cup, is tho veteran of the field, for he was foaled in 1919, and is thus in his 11th year.' The son of Campfire has contested tho race on three previous occasions, and he has two wins and 8, second to his credit. In 192G he scored nnder 7,3; in 1928 he carried '8.4 into eecond place behind , Hynonna ,(9.fi), and last year he won under 8.4. ENGLISH-BRED VALKYRIAN At the dispersal sale of the Hinucra Stud in May last the English-bred sire Valkyrian (by William tho Third—Valkyr) was sold for which could well be regarded as a bargain lot. Last season the progeny of Valkyrian won stakes to the value of £6201, which was a good record considering the/ limited opportunities that came to the brown horse. There is every reason to »nticipoto that Valkyrinn's progeny racing this season will capture a sum in excess of tbut down to their credit lust term, for the total is now close to £OOOO. Valkyrian is probably more advantageously placed in the South.lsland than when located in the Waifcato, and he may therefore beget a firstrater.

A GERMAN SCANDAL. What is known as tho Caligula case is utill; dragging on in Germany after several years of litigation. Recently three individuals were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment, and one of them has already appealed. Tbo cane turuß on alleged fraud in connection with the sale of tho stallion Caligula, winner "of tho Doncaster St. to the German Government. Nothing, of course, is alleged against ihe vendor, Sir Victor Sassoon, but only against

certain other individuals, the allegation third at Tetrarchato and Crimestor at WhnM ' being that the German Government was ngarei and slight improvement on that form •\ induced to pay a far larger sua for the i may enable her .to race creditably ii* the " r fcorso tfcEn the vcadpr received, J novice raceß she is booked to coptest.
