AFFRAY WITH CONSTABLE.

SHIP'S FIREMAN IN COURT.

TWO MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.

The story of an affray in the railway station entrance on Tuesday afternoon, when civilians went to the aid of a conltablo who was thrown to the ground, was told in the Police Court yesterday.

George Thornham, aged 36, fireman, was charged with being drunk in the railway entrance, with resisting Constable Day, with using obscene language and with wilfullv damaging a pair of trousers, valued at £1 13s. A charge of assaulting Arthur Hayward Dowsing was also preferred against Thornham and John Ryan, aged 36, another fireman, against whom further charges of obstructing the constable and using obscene language were brought. Ryan stated that he remembered nothing* of the incident, while Thornham admitted all the offences except the assault. Senior-Sergeant O'Grady said Dowsing complained to the constable that he had been assaulted about 4 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon. The constable saw tho two accused and questioned them, telling Thornham that he would take him to the Queen's Wharf polico station. Thornham then used tho language mentioned in the charge, while Ryan interfered and tho constable was thrown to the ground. Conslablo Day managed, however, to handcuff Thornham and with the assistance of civilians secured Ryan, who had his arm round the constable's neck while ho was struggling with Thornham. Tho magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, convicted both accused, who were stated to have long lists. Sentences of one month's imprisonment on the charges of assault and of resisting tho police, tho terms to be cumulative, were imposed on each accused, who were convicted and discharged on tho other charges.
