TREATY OF WAITANG!

THE FIRST SIGNATURES.

NINETIETH ANNIVERSARY. Ninety years ago to-day the first signatures were placed on tho Treaty of Waitangi, under which the Maoris ceded all their rights and powers of sovereignty to Queen Victoria, their territorial rights being, secured to the chiefs and the tribes. Captain Hobson, R.N., had arrived in the Bay of Islands on January 29, 1840, empowered, with the consent of the natives, to proclaim the sovereignty of the Queen, and the clauses of the treaty, which has been described as the basis of the amicable relations between the Maori and pakeha races which now exist, were drawn up and approved. From Waitangi the treaty was carried around the Maori tribal districts and in less than six months 512 signatures were affixed.

British sovereignty over the South Island was formally proclaimed at Cloudy Bay on June 17, 1840.
