CANTERBURY NOTES.

FAST WORK AT RICCARTON. PREPARING FOR DUNEDIN. PAQUITO BACK TO FORM. [UY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuoaday. The outside of tho eourso proper was open for fast work at Riccarton to-day and trainers with horses booked to race at Dunedin nest week took every opportunity

of the splendid going provided. P. V. Mason was first on the ecene with Jaleux, Pride and Swiftray. Tho trio had a strong working gallop from the nine furlong to the half-mile post, and finished together.

Praise, Greenaway and Ozone were despatched from tho straight five furlong barrier and timing them was not practicable. Ozone was in front until 100 yds. : off the post, where Praise and Greenaway drew away from him and orossed the line abreast about a length in front of the Saltash youngster. The leading pair impressed by the manner in which they completed their task and both should do well at Wingatui.

Dunraven appeared to be going a little bettor than Coroner at tho end of half a mile run in the good time of 43 3-ss. Winsome Hind easily beat Full Feather over the same ground in 48 4-ss. The former will not bo taken to Dunedin, but will; bo rosorred for this month's meeting at Riocarton. Blue Peter was over a length in front of Marshnni after covering seven furlongs in 1.33. Silver Coot showed his usual track ability by roeling off half a mile along (ho back in 19 4-ss.

Mepnaant and Netley strode over six furlongß comfortably in 1.18. Disorder and Waterline wore restricted to strong work only over a mile.

What Not recorded 50 2-5s for half a mile and Spoon executed a . similar task in 51s. Ball Dress beat Semper Paratus over four furlongs in 51s. Leader and The Viscount traversed five furlongs in 1.4.

Paquito with less than 7 stono on his back -finished on strongly at tho conclusion of a mile gallop, beating Gay Crest, who joined in at six, furlongs, in tho creditable time of 1.42 2-5. The first half took 50 l-ss. The effort ehowed Paquito to be back to form and ho can be expected to race prominently in the Dunedin Cup. Count Cavour and Amor were associated in a similar task, the former having a half length advantage at the post. The time was 1.44, the first half milo taking 51 2-ss; Phastar and Tariff, both carrying good weights, created a favourable impression by covering eix furlongs in 1.16, finishing together. The former is very well at present and should soon make amends for many disappointments to his presem stablo. Hoylako was three lengths in front of Quarterdeck at the end of a Jr.ilo occupying 1.45, the first half in 51 2-ss. Ranelaeh and Sea Raid reeled off half a milo along tho back in 51a, the former making an encouraging showing.

Nightmarch, with a light apprentice in the saddle, did not appear to be oxtended in recording 1.2 for five furlongs, tho concluding half in 495.

Pangolin (I. Tilson) negotiated four hurdles, but did not put his usual dash ipto the task.

Don Jose, joined by Pixie Gold at five furlongs, galloped seven furlongs on tho plough in 1.32. Topere registered a similar performance and Audience ran half a mile on the same track in 50 2-Ds. J. Baban will probably take this pair to Wingatui. F. D. Jones' team for the Dunedin meetirtg will be comprised of Paquito, Marsbam, Gay Crest, Dunraven and Coroner. G. Murray Aynsley has recommissioned Footfall, who was on the tracks to-day looking in splendid order after his lengthy spell. The Chokebore stable will be represented at tho Dunedin meeting by Hurly Burly, Disorder, Waterline, Straighlcourse and Ball Dress.

MATAMATA RACING CLUB.

ANNUAL race meeting.

The Matamata Racins Club holds its annual raco meeting next Saturday, and it should only requiro fino weather to enable the club to score a pronounced succesn. There is material in tho eight events which form tho programme to ensuro ft capital day's sport, and with special train facilities from various points and other means of transport, it may bo regarded as pretty certain that racegoers will bo present in strong force.

DISTRICT COMMITTEE.

PROGRAMMES APPRpVED

At u meeting of tho Auckland District Committee, held yesterday, tho following programmes were approved:—Waimai Polo Club, March 1; To Aroha Jockey Club, March I and 3; Waikato Racing Club, April J2 and 14. The suspension of A. G. Parsons for two weeks by tho Takapuna Jockey Club for interference during the Rangitoto Handicap was continued. Several applications for licences were consided and reported on to tho Licensing Committee. NOTES FROM WELLINGTON. LITTLE WORK AT TRENTHAM. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN coil RESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. There is not u great deal of work of interest at Trontham at present, although tho tracks are in excellent order. The trial grass was in use this morning, but few horses galloped: Glare was sent out for a good solid task, which lie accomplished well. J. Lowo leaves with him on Friday for Dunedin for the Cup meeting. v H. B. Lorigan fient Cimabuo and Dolomito iiway to New Plymouth this morning. Botii have done well, particularly Cimabuo, who ran a smart fivo furlongs yesterday morning, Oratrix has done well since her race at Pahiatua and she will liavo licr next outing at Woodvillc. Jf. I'rilchard has not done a great, deal with Gobiin Market eince taking him over. This tanner achieves a good percentage of success ana should place Goblin Market successfully. Tho Absurd gelding has been racing among tho best and has not been quite gf.od enough, but he should win his chare of races in his new ownership. Tho entries for tho Woodvillo meeting are again a tribute to tho popularity of that course. With Toxeuma, Concentrate, Oratrix and Great Charter' engaged in tho major handicaps there is a suggestion of class, but some of tho lesser lights in tt'ieso races are of such calibre that tho best horses will have to carry big weights. As usual tho two-year-old events at this meeting promise to bo highly interesting,

THE DARGAVILLE MEETING. Tho Dargnville Racing Club's annual race meeting, which is fixed to be hold on Saturday and Monday, February 22, 24. has attrncted a good Hat of entries, and tho outlook is such as to givo promise of tho' approaching gathering at Awukino Point proving tho most successful held at Northern "Wairoa Tho weights for tho first day's ijvciils will be declared by Mr. P. J. McManemiu next Monday. In the list of nominations published in yesterday's issue, Golden Wedding's name was inadvertently omitted 'from tho following events:—Darzaville Cup, Kaihu Handicap, President's Handicap, and Waihue Handicap.
