LICENCE FOR BUSES SOUGHT.

REQUEST TO TRANSPORT BOARD

An application for a licence to rim buses over the waterfront road was made to the Transport Board yesterday by L. J. Keys, Limited, through their solicitors. The letter stated: "The residents of the waterfront will undoubtedly wish to use the new road, giving quicker and cheaper access. On the other hand residents whose homes are on the high lands back from tho waterfront have still to be catered for by vehicles running through Remuera and Newmarket. It is impossible to sever the services, as the latter area alone could not support a service of anything like the frequency or convenience of the existing service. Tho two areas, however, can be economically served by one co-ordinated service and only by that means."

This would involve considerable extension and renewal of plant, with the necessary largo expenditmn' of capital. The arrangements for ordering and building new vehicles would have to bo undertaken at once in order that the convenience of the public would not be prejudiced. Obviously, Mr Keys could not embark on this expenditure without some security of tenure. It was impossible to expend many thousands of pounds, facing the risk that at any time his right to run might bo either challenged or terminated and having thrown on his hands an expensivo fleet, for which thero would bo no market at anything approaching its real value Accordingly, the firm asked that a licence should be granted for the Orakei, Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St. Heliers waterfront routes, in addition to those already run by the company, for a period of five years. The application was referred to next week's committee meeting of tho board.
