SHIP CAPTAIN'S ILLNESS.
ATTACK OF RHEUMATISM. ADMISSION TO HOSPITAL. Under tho command of its first officer, Mr. Hooper, the American steamer West Loquassaack sailed from New Plymouth last Saturday in continuation of its voyage from Sydney to New York. The ship called unexpectedly at Now Plymouth on Friday night in order to obtain medical attention for its master, Captain A. T. Forsythe.
The steamer left Sydney intending to proceed to New York direct, via the Panama Canal. Some days out, however, the captain became seriously ill and his condition was considered so serious that a radio message was sent announcing that the ship would bo diverted to Manukau for the advice of a doctor. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, the New Zealand agents, replied that the ship, which was drawing 24 feot, could not cross the Manukau Bar. The result whs that a course was set for New Plymouth, the nearest port. When the ship anchored in the stream at New Plymouth Dr. W. I{. Wade, the port medical officer, wont out with Captain Mclntyre, the Harbour Board's pilot, and found Captain Forsythe was in a high fever. He ordered the patient's removal to the public hospital, but as it was then low tido tlio ship could not be berthed until later in the evening. -As the illness could not be immediately diagnosed the officers and crew were subjected to" a strict examination beforo being allowed ashore.
An attack of rheumatism is Captain Forsythc's trouble, according to information "supplied by ono of tho doctors at tho hospital on Sunday. Tho patient's condition was then described as "quite comfortable."
