"Anxious,"—The official return shows that King's Guard's position at the starting post was No, 10.

ANOTHER FOR NEW ZEALAND.

GAY BALLERINA'S VICTORY.

BY PHAETON

The winning performance registered by Gay Ballerina in tho decision of the Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick last Monday adds another important event to the remarkable series of successes by New Zealand horses on the Australian turf during the present season. The Adrian Knox Stakes, which is run over a mile course, is confined to year-old filließ at special weights (8.5 each). Apparently Gay Ballerina disposed of tho opposition in attractive stylo and wo may expect to learn that the bay daughter of Lord Quex is now accented as tho best filly of her age performing this season in New South Wales.

A FORTUNATE PURCHASE. HANDSOME RETURN. The Sydney sportsman Mr. H., J. Kirkpatrick, who bought Gay Ballerina at two-years-old, has very good reason to look back with a large degree of pleasuro to his visit to New Zealand last autumn, for it was after witnessing tho filly's winning performance in tho North Island Challenge Stakes at Treutham that encouraged him to effect her purchase at 2000 guineas. It is well known the New Zealand filly won a stako of £550 straightaway for her new owner and with victories in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes and Avondale Stakes and other placed moneys Bhe had won £2200 in stakes under Mr. Kirkpatrick's colours when her two-year-old career closed. Since racing in Now South Wales Gay Ballerina has won three races, which brings her capture in stakes since racing under Mr. Kirkpatrick's colours to £6568.

NEW ZEALAND-BRED HORSES. VICTORIES IN AUSTRALIA. The exact amount of prize-money won by New Zealand-lyed horses in Australia in the first six' months of the season has yet to bo ascertained, but the opinion can be expressed with confidence that it constitutes a record for tho Dominion. NightmarcU'a winnings alone amount to £17,4b2 and £14.509 is down to the credit of Pilar Lap, which represents a tola! of £31,971. The following is tho list of important races won this season in Australia by New Zealandbred horses:—

Warwick Stakes (Limerick). Rosehill Guineas (Phar Lap). A.J.C. Derby (Phar Lap), •Epsom Handicap (ISightmarcb). Craven Plole (Phar Lap). R&ndwick Plato (jSightmarch). "VV. S. Cox Plate (ISightmarch). Victoria Derby (Phar Lap). Melbourne Cup (Nightmarch): V.R.C. Handicap (Second Wind). South Australian Derby (Hot Dprin„). December Stakes (Veilmond). _ Cnrrington Stakes (Gay Ballerina). Adrian Knox Stakes (Gay Ballerina).

With Nightmarch and Phar Lap both likely to prove star performers during tho autumn season "New Zealand s year is likely to secure a further place in the limelight.

DARGAVILLE RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING.

The Dargavillo Racing Club's Summer Meeting is fixed to be held on Saturday and Monday, February 22 and 21. The programme issued in connection with the meeting comprises 16 events, with prizemoney to tho amount of £1285, Tho Dargaville Cup of £2OO (11 miles) is the leading event of tho first day, and the President's Handicap of £175 (nine furlongs) is tho principal race of the second day. The Avoca Handicap and the Ruawai Handicap, which stand out as tho leading sprint events, are respectively worth £IOO. From the programme, which will bo found published in full in another column, it will be seen that nominations close next Friday, January 31. at 5 p.m., and tho same may bo lodged either with the secretary, Mr. J. P. Stanaway, Dargaville, or with Messrs. Blomfield and Co., High Street. Auckland.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. THE YEARLING LOTTERY. Under tho heading "Tho Other Side, in referring to tho purchase of yearlings, the Sydney Refereo remarks:—'" Ono prominent trainer remarked during tho week that of tho 14 yearlings ho received after the last sales—many of them his own—only two have been raced-ono threo times and tftfc other once. Another trainer has raced ono out of 16. That is the side of yearling buying which doesn't receive so much publicity as the purchase of Phar Lap for tho valuo of suburban third-class platers. As it costs in tho vicinity of £IOO a your to train and nominate a horso, tho loss represented by yearlings in tho two above-mentioned siablos caii be estimated. Of course, there is atill amlilo time for them to prove themselves,'

ONE OP THE PASSED IN. Included with tho J'OarliUKß paused in at tho Trenthiim snlo last wcok was it brown colt by NHitter Minntrol from Equitas. Tho ,youuK»lor created a favourable impression nml tho bidding was carried to 425 guineas, but tho reserve placed oil the youngster wns 173 puinena higher limn tho (lum bid at tho riusside. EciuitftH iu tlio dam of Oratiosu. who has won fumo us tho dam of a hraco of cud winnow in Oi'fitrix and Concentiato. NiUtter Minutrnl has yet 1o bo represented by an important winner and tho colt from E<jußa» is ticked off US a liltoly ono to earn distinotion for ilio All Black horao. . VETERAN PEIiFOUMS WELL. A veteran oC tho race truck that has a Kood record' to his credit in Now South "Wales is Donald, an eight-year-old eon of Don Revtialdo and tho Antonio maro Andol. On Boxing Day last, ho won tho Summer Cup under 8.9. beating a field, and on Monday last bo led the Bold homo in tho Annivorsary Handicap, in which race he carried 9.G, and beat a fiold of 10. Donald baa contested over 70 races and has won stakes to the value of £IO,OOO for his breeder and owner. Mr. E. F. Smith. The fact of Donald not lißvma been called upon to raco at two and three-years-old no doubt played the strong part in placing him among the good performers when rising nine-years-old.
