BOWLING NOTES.

DOMINION TOURNAMENT.

THE PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP.

| SUCCESS OF AUCKLANDERS. EY SKIP. The success of the Carlton pair, G. Gladding and W. Jenkin, in tho pairs championship at the Dominion tournament will be well received in local circles. Tho fighting finish which they put up in the final game speaks well for their playing ability. Although this competition is generally looked upon as the least worthy of the threo staged by tho Dominion Association, yet a certain amount of kudos pertains to it, if for no other reason that the fact that to stay in after the section play is completed tho successful ones cannot suffer one defeat as in the other two competitions, where the "two-life" system applies. t A singular fact about the Aucklanders , win is that both are ex-members of the Rocky Nook Club, but the win was sustained in the Carlton Club's colours, to which club tho players now belong. They have had considerable experience of tho game, tho lead, G. Gladding, being a conspicuous performer of years ago when as ski]) to his brother, who now plays in Dunedin, he generally used to be a section winner in tho one time Easter pans competition. Ho used also to skip full rink combinations with fair success. The recent win is somewhat of a recompense for his great work in local bowling circles, where his arduous duties as secretary of tho centre preclude him from a too frequent participation in bowling. Tho Successful Skip. The successful skip, W. Jenkin, was at one. time one of the best known com-, petitors locally, but since a trip to Australia with a bowling party a few years ago did not take the same interest or active participation in the game as formerly. Consequently he has not figured among the front rankers for some time. However, it seems he has Jost little or none of his old-time brilliancy. Jenkins* strong point seems to have been in fast work, a feature of the game ho was always good at. Possessing a wellcalculated running shot and an accurate and fast drive, his work in this department would be eminently suitable to a pairs game with so many bowls in use, and so much opportunity for this particular class of play,. ' Jenkin skipped a Carlton rink which went a long way in the rink competition before being put out, and his showing in both competitions proves that ho lias struck his best form. Interest in the single rink championship of the Auckland Bowling Centre has not Keen sustained, the entries show a slight falling off again this year. Still, 22 clubs are represented and the entries are quite sufficient to make a pleasant tournament. Play will commence at the Remuera green this morning at J o'clock. . Opinions seem to differ over this form of competition, but that is not to be wondered at when a few are required out of a lot of candidates. There is no doubt the competition is a good one, and if properly carried out by the various clubs placing the right men in the field, tliere should be nothing against it..

Formation of Rink. Some uniform system, however, seems to be desirable in the formation of the rink. Meantime there are many ways, and in some cases the results are not at all satisfactory. The prior elimination contest, which is carried out by the Auckland and Remuera clubs, is, of course, suitable to those clubs on account of the large memberships, but such a course is not- so feasible in the cases of clubs with small memberships and with a dearth of good and seasoned players. One suggestion seems rather a good one if carried out in its entirety. That is, each club should supply a graded list of its players to the secietary of the Centre one month after the season opens and when the time of tho competition draws near the selector or selectors of the various clubs should choose a team, taking whom they consider the best player in each group of leads, twos, threes and skips. Such a system, it is contended, would be more in harmony with the object of the competition, since the four players would be representative of the class of play they regularly perform. When the entries are received by the secretary of the Centre he could then check them over with the graded lists previously obtained and so stop any chance having a preponderance of skips or threes. Tho idii would have to be faithfully carried out to test its true worth. Theredoes not appear to be any reason why the Centre executive could not give a lead and lay down some law. At any rate it is a matter that could be discussed at the annual meeting of the Centre, and a recommendation brought ifi to the effect that it is desirable to V have the representative rinks formed from graded lists of players. Much of the heart-burning and jealousy which is now supposed to exist over the selection of the teams would be eliminated when it was foQnd that tljo front division men at least were players ranking as bona-fide leads and twos.

Various Club Teams. The following teams will represent the various clubs in the tournament ni-day: East, Maefarlane, Mingins, Procter, (Remuera) v. Yeo, Farley, Wnkerley, Keatley (Rocky Nook); Williams, Burke, Fletcher, Steele (Auckland) v. Mclnness, Letham, Jury, Parsons (Ponsonby); Massey, Granger, Knight, Hollier (Mangere) v. Benson, Kelly, Denison. Levland (Dominion Road); Dick, Caddv, Liversidge, Buckley (Grey Lynn) v. Bilkey, Plevdell, Hosking, Armstrong (Pukeko'he); Miller, Joll, Trayes, Baker (Mount. Eden) v. Geldard, Norcross, Moors, Higginbothnm (Henderson); Wilson, Tarrant, Lyons, McPliail (Waitemala) v. Philip, Ivoefoed, Brookfield, Wright (St. Heliers); Hunt, Corfe, If,anna, Matthews (Takapuna) v. Sinclair, Watson, Cox, Ellisdon' (Devonport) : Sainty, Weller, Johnson, McMaster (Stanley) v. Hill, Edmunds, James, Vincent (Edendale) ; Bates, Mitchell, Kilgour, Snedden (Carlton) v. Sainty, Gregory, Pollard, Thompson (Hillsborough); Kendall, Boyne, Jenkins, Blakey (Epsom) v. McCullough, Waters, Knight, Bayliss (Papatoetoe); Cook, Sykes, Lippiatt, Gardiner (Otahuliu v. Green, Cowell, Vella, Wright, (Onehunga).

A Solid Combination. The Ponsonby quartet reads strong enough, find if Parsons can get home on Steele, Auckland, in the first game, be should go a long way. Last year he suffered a bad defeat in the opening round against Robertson, Onehunga. The Pulcokoho team also reads well and appears to be well-balanced. The wholo four players arc used to each other's play and, moreover, with the possible exception of Bilkey, who is a young player, are all seasoned tournament players. Keatley did not show to advantage in the Christmas event, but that was not entirely his fault, and much better performances may be expected in this competition. His team is very good forward and with the veteran Wakorley as number three, there should not bo much serious difficulty left for Keatley to overcome.

The Remuera rink, skipped by Procter, strikes the eyo as a solid combination. Procter has a fine number threa in Mingins, who has performed very consistently in tournaments this season and he will 'only need to keep up the skip end for the team to have a good chance. The remaining teams are all, more or less, good and fairly representative of their respective clubs' strength.
