good competition seen. GREASY MERINO MAKES 25^d. (Received January 28, 11.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 28. The Sydney wool sales were resumed to-day. There was good general competition. The market, in sympathy with tho recent decline in London and Brisbane, was 10 per cent, below the previous Sydney sales, and in the case of poor, thin, wasty and dusty lots, the decline was 12£ per cent. Greasy Merino to-day made A total of 8510 bales was sold. THE LONDON MARKET. NO CHANGE IN PRICES. LONDON, Jan. 27. At the London wool sales to-day, 10,290 bales were offered, of which 1280 were from New Zealand. There was a large offering of greasy Merinos, chiefly superstyle, and a small offering of crosshreds. Fair'competition huled. Prices were unchanged. A New Zealand greasy crossbred clip, "Hauini," sold at to Is. The Bradford tops market is weak. Lower quotations are offered, but there is no business.

MONEY IN AUSTRALIA. INTEREST RATES RAISED. (Received January 28, 11.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 28. The associated banks in Sydney have raised their interest rates for both deposits and advances. The rate on advances has been increased by j per cent., the minimum rate now being 7 per cent. The result will be to put, a check on expenditure, and discourage speculative buying. MARKET REPORTS. FRUIT AND PRODUCE PRICES. There were very few changes in tho values for all classes of fruit at the Auckland City Markets yesterday. Heavy supplies of most varieties were available and met with a slightly improved demand. Californian oranges sold at 37s 6d to 45s a case, an increase of 2s 6d a case on last week's quotations. Ripe bananas realised 10s to 25s a bushel case, according to quality, last week s rates being 6s to 16s a case. A slight reduction was shown in the values for hothouse grapes. Nectarines sold at 6s to 10s a case. A small increase in the prices for potatoes was tho outstanding change in tho field produce section. Tho market has been glutted with potatoes for a considerable time, tho returns proving unprofitable to growers. Adequate stocks of cabbage and lettiico were available, while heavy stocks of beans and inferior peas camo forward. Fair supplies of all lines of green vegetables were also marketed. An average demand existed for all classes. No cauliflowers were offered. Owing to decreasing supplies both hen and cluck eggs have increased in price by 2d a dozen. There is usually a falling off in stocks at this time of tho year, andfurther increases in values are expected. A good demand existed for both varieties of eggs. Moderate supplies of farmers' bstter sold at the slightly easier rate of Is to Is 3d per lb. Following aro yesterday's prices:—

SLUMP AT WINNIPEG. WINNIPEG, Jan. 27. Holders of wheat, discouraged by the diminishing interest of Europe in North American wheat, threw supplies on to the market to-day and values fell at one stage 3' cents per bushel, closing at 2J to If cents off. May wheat- closed at 1 dollar 23j cents.
