CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS.
SECOND BAY'S PLAY,
JIO -GREAT SURPRISES.;
A. L. FRANCE REGAINING FORM.
MISS KNIGHT STARTS BADLY,
[by telegraph.—press association.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday.
Ideal conditions ruled for the second day of the New Zealand tennis championships to-day. There were no surprises in the singles, but the ladies' doubles provided some surprises.
Stedman (Auckland) made his usual slow start against O'Brien (Wellington), but the vigorous attack he launched after his indifferent beginning put the issue beyond doubt. Sturt (Auckland) was never troubled by Roussell (Wellington). Arigas (Canterbury) took another young Wellington player, R. Howe, too cheagjy and almost paid for it by the loss oF a set.
Malfroy was not himself against Lampe, although he won in three straight sets, but A. L. France showed signs of coming on to his gamo against Wallace, whom he is leading 6—l, 6—3, in an unfinished match.
The ladies' singles provided few good matches, most winners having a comfortable passage to the third round. Miss Whyte (Wellington) maintained the same pressure which gave her a well-deserved win against Miss Wake yesterday, when she went on court against Mrs. C. Smith (Wanganni), who had defeated Miss Marion Macfarlane. Miss Knight (Auckland) was hard pressed in the first set by Miss Welch and was down —5. However, she fought her way to set point. Afterwards she played with more confidence, winning six successive games in the second set.
In the men's doubles Angas and Sturt began in fine vein against Smyth and Wallace and although they did not keep up the pace which gave them the first set, they managed to work their way through. Sturt served at top form. Stedman showed his best forin yet when he partnered Wilson against Glanville and Johns.
Mrs. Melody and Mrs. Scott gained a lucky win against Misses Howe and Nicholls after losing the first set against sheer superiority in strokes and placement. Another recovery was made by Mrs. Sturman and Miss Lloyd, who were hit off the court by Misses Whyte and Gibson in the opening set of their match. The younger players lost both succeeding sets.
At 5 p.m. a shower of rain prevented a start being made with the mixed doubles, which will begin to-morrow. Results are:—
