GOATS ON MOUNT EGMONT.
MENACE TO FOREST GROWTH.
EFFORTS AT DESTRUCTION-
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NE.T7 PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. The harm done by goats to Mount Egmont National Park, and the far-reaching effects on the fertility of the soil, were stressed by Mr. T. C. List, chairman of the Egmont National Park Board, at a meeting of the North Egmont Committee last evening. He appealed for assistance for the board in its campaign against the goats.
"I want (o emphasise," said Mr. List, "that the board is pushing the work to the utmost to protect the forests on the slopes of Mount Egmont, because it is convinced that if those forests are lost the fertility of Taranaki will be seriously affected."
The goats had not been much reduced in number on the larger range, said the board's ranger. The total killed up to January 13 was 1460. From now on they should kill very many more.
