OTAHUHU CLUB'S MEETING.

NOTES ON THE FORM.

BY PICADOR

Last year tlio Otahuliu Trotting Club's Spring Meeting opened on a Saturday and concluded on tho following "Wednesday. This year the days were reversed, and when tho toWdisator figures for the first, doy were about £6OOO below those for the oil day last year a decreased turnover seemed almost cortnin. However, speculation on the second day was very brisk, with the result that tho meeting wound up with an increase of £787 in tho figuics. This was indeed very satisfactory and the club has reason to be pleased with tho success of the gathering. Tho racing on both days was full of interest and clobo finishes were a featuro of tho contests. Nearly all tho winners and placed horses went faster than handicapped to do and on tho whole the times recorded were good. Failure to bogin correctly cost Ando Spray a victory on tho first day. when he finished very fast in second place in the Introductory Handicap and only went under hv a neclc. Audo Spray mado no mistake at his next appearance, when ho stepped •tin 40 2-5s oft 4m 59s in the Innovation Handicap and won in a stylo suggesting that lie is likely to achieve further success as the season advances. Under tho new system of handicapping he will still como in on a nico mark and therefore his prospects in his next few starts ahould be bright. Togo's Promise as Trotter.

After effecting a surprise in the Introductory Handicap Togo's rromiso confirmed the form by trotting another good race into second place in tho Innovation Handicap. As he went exactly nine seconds belter than handicapped to do at the pecoml attempt, ho was rather unlucky not In liavo won again, for Iho effort would havo been good enough to have won in the clans more times than it would have been beatey. Togo's Promise is undoubtedly a better trotter than ho was a pacer, and will only require to repeat tho dash ho revealed at this meeting to win in his turn among the slow-class trotters.

Littlo notice was taken of tho defeat of | Enawah when she failed to race prominently off the back mark in the large field in tho Mangero Handicau and Hho was expected to perform in improved fashion off ' tho limit in the Epsom Handicap. Unfortunately for her numerous backers, sho /ailed to reveal her true form and soon drifted to the rear after going away in a handy position on the roils. Enawah displayed speed in patches through the race and it might bo wi3e to dismiss her Ipck of form at the meeting, for sho will assuredly do better in the near future. One of the most impressive wins at the meeting was that of Kelp, who scored at a nice price in the Epsom Handicap. The chestnut pacer lost a lot of ground at th» start to be last when the field had covered three furlongs, and it was only by a brilliant run on the outside in the final stages that he managed to win in the last few strides. Kelp is a young horse likely to make considerable improvement in tho next few months and should have no difficulty in taking a faster record than he already possesses. It is in his favour that ho will still be on a nice mark and his future prospects appear to be particularly bright. Like others near tho back-end of the handicap. Arachne failed to show up in tho large field in the Mangerc Handicap and sho gave a better indication of her ability when she finished third off the limit in the Epsom Handicap. Only for breaking up badly at the start in the latter event and actually being tho last to get going, sho would certainly have made Kelp go faster and might have won. Once she settled down sho ran through quickly and paced solidly to tho end without coming home ho strongly as the winner, who did not go quite so fast early. Aiachne will have to bo unlucky not to win soon.

Promising Mountain Dell

After a good fourth in the Stewards' Handicap, Mountain Dell was confidently backed to win the Franklin Handicap and she justified tho support by loading throughout niul -winning handsomely. Mountain Dell went 4m 33s oft' a. 4m 37s mark and it was therefore not surprising that she had tho opposition well beaten at tho end. She could possibly have gono slightly faster if necessary, and there is every reason to anticipate that she will take a faster record before tho season concludes. On tho run sho recorded sho would not have been out of place in the leading event and no doubt she will bo capable of racing well when promoted to better classes than she has yet contested.

Four races were exacted from Wiltna Dillon at tho meeting, and ho was an expensive horse for backers, who supported him solidly on each occasion. His best effort was to finish third in the FergussQii Handicap and his form was disappointing, although ho registered 4m 3'2s over two miles 'when ho secured tho minor placing. Wilma Dillon is probably a better horso than his displays here would indicate and it is moro than likely that he will make amends before tho season is over. Tho big fellow is endowed with considerable brilliancy and should take a fast record over short courses. Free Advice went fairly well without reaching a placo among tho sprinters in tho Massey Memorial Handicap and evidently benefited by tho race, for sho made an improved showing in the Fergusson Handicap on tho second day and only went under in tho last few strides. Sho registered her best performance to dalo in covering tho two miles in 4m 27 3-59 and seems likely to reach tho top of her form in the near future. Freo Advice is a particularly good pacer for her size and has been a good stake-earner for Messrs. McKcndriclc Brothers, who bred her.
