GOOD-BYE TO SUMMER.

LONGER GLOVES TO BE WORN.

THE COURT SHOE.

[srECIAL TO N.Z. HERALD.—COrYBIGHT.] LONDON. August SO. It is sad to liavo to say good-bye to summer fashions, but already the woollen jumpers have pushed tho last flowered chiffon frock out of tho shop windows. Fur coats are making a gallant show in others, and for those who have had their holiday, summer clothes will soon bo a memory. The new materials aro so delightfully attractive that it will be a joy to exchango our tumbled flimsies for a tweed' or kasha suit that looks seasonable and vet is so exquisitoly light. While the cnsemblo idea still persists it has become slightly more complicated. A beige hat is not a necessity with a beige coat; a black, red or green hat can look just as smart. Even tho dress beneath the coat is not obliged to match, but either dress or hat must look part of tho picture, and this needs even more care and thought. It was comparatively easy to set forth on a shopping expedition armed with a pattern of the chosen dress and make a round of tho shops, matching. But it is harder to get tho smart mixed colour note into your cnsemblo successfully. A dark blouse or jumper with a light coat and skirt is a novelty that crept into tho very late summer mode. This is an effective way of carrying out a mixed colour scheme, which presents few complications. If you can wear red successfully this idea is good with a red suit and the jumper in navy or black. Again, in almond green, with black satin or hyacinth bluo, and a deep navy bluo blouse. Tho coat may bo lined to match, but I prefer tho lining to match coat and skirt, leaving the jumper or blouse to creato tho sudden contrast.

With this typo of ensemble the hat should match either the suit or the jumper, or be a judicious blend of both, but do not introduce an outsido colour or the whole effect is spoilt. If you choose beige suit and brown jumper, a smart note is to select gloves and stockings in the dark brewn also, and, in tho case of a black jumpor, very fine mesh gunmetal stbekings look well with, of course, black shoes. Another way of getting a successful mixed colour ensemblo is to have a dress of some mixed material with tho coat taking up one of tho colours. A very smart model seen recently had a frock made of soft woollen material patterned in red, white, and bluo. Over this was worn a plain bluo jacketBeige, brown and yellow feather-weight tweeds are attractive with either a long, straight coat, or a short saquo one, in plain brown. Judging by present indications, longer gloves will be very fasbionablo with the more elaborate afternoon dresses this season, even with the long_ sleeves. Parisiennc: are wearing their gloves pulled up over tho cuffs, and if very long, wrinkling them softly round tho wrists. Light beigo in suedo or kid with light stockings, but darker shades with the darker stockings. While gloves will bo seen with smart black, or black and white costumes, and black gloves arc chic with printed crepe that have a black background. Evening gloves are still a matter of individual fancy, but they have a distinguished appearance after being so long out of fashion. Shoes remain simple: never bo tempted by anything showy or extraordinary in footwear. Concentrate on cut, fit, and quality, for, in any gathering of smartly dressed women, you will notice they are all wearing plain shoes. If you can successfully wear the court shoe," that is still tho favourite model in London and Paris, but unless perfectly comfortable, choose the support of a single bar or simple sandal_ shape. Comfort and balance are tho important things to study when selecting shoes. The most wonderfully-cut suit will loso its effect if ono cannot walk with an easy gliding step, and should they hurt, well, the agony written on one's face will spoil tho loveliest creation. This applies to young and old, particularly to the "new young," who, by careful dieting and beauty culture, look many years younger than their age. This was verv forcibly brought to my notice just recently.

.An exquisitely groomed woman sat opposite mo during a journey to town. I bad admired her hat at just the right angle, a beautifully cut tailored ensemble, v if l> -i becoming fox fur slung round lior shoulders, slender feet and ankles, in smart court shoes. On stepping out of the train she looked twenty years older, for her high-heeled shoes threw her forward, and evidently they did not grip her heels, and instead of an easy, springing walk to match her suit, slio almost shuffled! She was. indeed, an object lesson to any one who contemplated putting elegance beforo ease when choosing shoes. '
