In fine weather and on a holding ground a Southland fifteen defeated the Ashburton touring team by 19 points (tivo tries, two converted) to ti points (two unconverted t :ies). Southland was much superior in tho fcrum 1 " and tho backs saw far more of the ball than the Ashburton rearguard. Consequently the home side made most of tho vlay, tho backs throwing tho ball about in line style. Tho combined work, however, was responsible for only two of the tries, these being tho result of spectacular individual dashes.
