ZEPPELIN'S SIGNALS HEARD. (Received August 03. 11.15 p.m.) United Service. NEW YORK, Aug. C 5. [By Mr. Rnnsell Owen. Copyright 1928 by the New York Time* Company niul (he St. Louis Post Dispatch. They came no clear that we could hear them through the loud-speaker late in the evening. Her position was given as 1500 miles from Tokio, and she was flying at a height of 300 metres above the sea. The sun returned yesterday and sent its light flashing across the top of the Barrier to spread ovc-r the edge and touch the tops of the ice masses on the bay with fire. Far down on the south cliff the walls reflected the brilliant golden light, for which we have waited so long. The ice cliffs sparkled like gigantic mirrors winking back a message of welcome to the sun. The winter is far from over yet, and our coldest weather still has to come.
The surface snow everywhere around the camp is many feet higher than when we started our hibernation. An American flag was raised to-day by Commander Byrd's order. As it whipped out in a 20-mile wind we all uncovered our heads, although it was 40 below zero and the wind gripped our ears and noses painfully. Then a British flag was unfurled and a Norwegian, and evervono saluted each with bared head. The ceremony occupied several minutes. When it was over there was a rush for cover.
Jack O'Brien, our surveyor, hastily unfurled a green pennant for Ireland," and performed a snake dance at the doorway. But the wind was biting, and soon overcame even his Hibernian enthusiasm. We celebrated the big day with a turkey dinner.
