LABOUR PAPER'S ARTICLES.
COURT IMPOSES FINES.
CAUSE OF THE TIMBERMEN

The Full Court to-day imposed a (ine of £250 on the proprietors of tho Labour Daily and one of £SO on the editor, Mr. Q. Spedding. The Court held that there had been real and substantial interference with the course of justice by the publication of certain articles which were calculated to prejudice tho fair trial of the seven arrested union leaders in connection with tho timber trade strike when their cases wore sub judice. Mr. Justice D. G. Ferguson, actingChief Justice, said: "It lias been a matter of very seiious consideration for me whether we should bo justified in merely imposing a fino. It is impossible to come to any other conclusion than that it was respondents' deliberate intention to prejudice tho fair trial of the persons whose causo they were championing." Arthur Redmond, aged 46, one of tho timbermen on strike, was to-day sentenced to three months' imprisonment for assaulting a volunteer worker. He also was fined £5 for using improper languago.
All tho men who were airested in the com so of tho riot on Saturday outside Hudson's yards have been remanded until Monday.
Tlio Labour Daily recently contained severe criticism of the authorities for having the leaders of tlio timber workers' strike arrested. As a result tlio editor of the paper, Mr. Q. Spcdding, was called upon to show cause why ho and tlio proprietors should not he cited for contempt of Court. The paper said the arrests constituted a "frame up" and a conspiracy against Labour. On August 16 the Full Court reserved judgment in tlio case. Tho Court said it was satisfied that tho respondents had been guilty of contempt, hut it wished to consider what course it should take.

PREVENTION OF INTIMIDATION
(Received August 20, 11.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 20. The Premier of New South Wales, Mr. T. R. Bavin, announced after a meeting of the Cabinet to day that the Government had decided immediately to prevent mass picketing or any other form of intimidation of volunteer labour at the timber yards.
