WHANGAREI INTERESTS.
LOAN PROPOSAL DEFEATED.
BOROUGH COUNCIL BY-ELECTION. [ll V TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Tuesday. The by-olcction held to day to fill the vacancy 011 the Whangarei Borough Council caused by the resignation of Mr. A A. Rust, resulted in the return of Mr. P. R. Gardner, who received 282 votes. The other candidate, Mr."A. W. Armstrong, received 225. The waterworks loan proposal was defeated. The voting was: For, 219; against, 222. The proposal was for the purposo of laying a 12in. cast iron main from the junction of Cameron and Bank Streets to tho Whau Valley reservoir, connecting tho present 4in. mains and laying new 4in. mains where necessary; also, relaying and conditioning existing Tin. and 12in. mains.
Tho Whangarei Borough Council last ovoning appointed tho Mayor, Mr. .W. Jones, to till.tho vacancy on the Whangaroi Hospital Board, caused by tho resignation of Mr. D. A. McLean. Mr. Jones was for many years a member of the board, and was only defeated at the last municipal elections after tho official recount.
As tho result of representations made by petrol station proprietors the council has decided 'to alter tho agreements so that it shall not bo compulsory to light tlie pumps. The Mayor said the position had been gone fully into and he was satisfied there was no more danger than from telegraph poles, and rib danger from fire if a petrol pump was knocked ovor.
