ELMHSLIE DEMONSTHATION

Reference to tho demonstrations that occurred on tho Ellerslio racecourse on tho second day of tho last spring meeting was made at tho annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club yesterday afternoon. Tho matter was brought up by Mr. C. E. Major, who, expressing tho view that tho occurrence might havo boen disastrous, snid ho had to consuro tho committee for its lack of knowledgo of mob psychology. Ho was not being wise after tho event, becauso he had at tho timo suggested to u member of tho committee that ho should be allowed to speak to the people and tell them that there would bo strict inquiry into tho whole position and that the money would bo held up until that inquiry. Ho hoped tho new committeo would have nomo plan for dealing with any similar futuro occurrence.

The president, Sir Edwin Mitclielson, said he could not agree. He admitted that (ho position might have been very serious, but it would have been quite impossible to do what Mr. Major had suggested, simply because the Btarter had ruled a fair start and the raco was a legitimate raco. Therefore tho committeo had no riulit to hold up tho money or hold an inquiry into what was done.
