LEAGUE OF PENWOMEN
At. the League of New Zealand Penwomen, Mr. C. I!. Ford gave an interesting talk on " Architecture in J'oetrv." Mrs. C'arr-l'ollett presided ofer a large attendance of members, and friends. The lecturer said it was an unfortunate fact that the fine arts have, during the last century or two, become separated from each other, causing a distinct loss both to art and the artist. lie pointed out the intimate connection existing between architecture, poetry and music, and the rhythm that runs through each. Shakespeare, ho said, was the earliest [Kiel to employ architectural imagery in order to heighten poetic expression. Other poets aptly quoted ranged from Pope, who showed more knowledge of the subject than any other of his era, Gray, Adelaide Proctor, Scott, Shelley. Byron, Words worth, Tennyson and Hardy, down to present-day writers, including Maselield and Drink water.
