NEW ZEALAND BUTTER.

EXPORTS TO CANADA.:

NO EXTENSIVE MARKET.

OPPOSITION FROM FARMERS.

"Farmers in Canada appreciate the importation of New Zealand butter as much as farmers in New Zealand would appreciate the importation of Canadian butter." This is the view of Mr. Norton Francis, a member of tho Christchurch firm of I'ync, Gould, Guinoss, Limited, who returned from a business trip to tho United States and Canada by tho Makura yesterday.

Mr. Francis does not view very favourably tho prospects of extending tho market for New Zealand primary products in Canada. Tho population was not largo enough to warrant largo importations, ho said, arid it was only natural that Canada should wish to bo self-supporting. He understood that somo Now Zealand butter had been imported recently into tho United States, chiefly duo to the rise in tariff. However, ho considered that tho chances of building up a largo export business wero remote; Both tho United States and Canada wero going to try to keep New Zealand butter out.

"Everything in the United States seemed very prosperous," Mr. Francis said. "Tho farmers, however, aro complaining of the high prices they have to pay for goods and the low prices they receive for their own products. In tho industrial ceutrcs thero is great activity and people aro looking forward confidently to another successful business year."

Mr. Francis said ho visited several chambers of commerce in his capacity of president of the Canterbury body. All were anxious to co-operate and showed a great interest in New Zealand activities.

Mr. Francis, who is accompanied by his wife and daughter, will leave for Christchurch to-morrow evening.
