STRIKE COLLAPSING.
TIMBERMEN SEEK WORK.
DEFIANCE OF THE LEADERS
(Received May 23. 9.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 23. There are indications ttiat the timberworkers' strike is liable tu collapse at any time. In the last few days about 200 men have returned to work.
Timber merchants state that applications for re-employment have been received from many skilled men. Yesterday 150 men resumed work on new buildings in tho city after defying tho Strike Committee and forcing it to sanction their return to work.
As the result of a meeting of employers and employees in Melbourne the prospects of a settlement thc.ro are considered to be bright. Definite proposals with that object in view were made there to-day. These were based on the men returning to work for 48 hours a week provided that further inquiry is made into the question .whether the industry is able to afford a return to a 44-hour week.
