SUICIDE OR PLUNDER?

BANK ROBBERY STORY. REMARKABLE EXPLANATION. John Entwistle, who pleaded guilty in Adelaide recently to the armed hold-up of a bank and stealing £250, said that before the event he had been despondent and went to the bank of the Torrens River to shoot himself. Fate intervened, be said, for a couple were sitting nearby, and not wishing to shock the young woman by his death struggles he put his gun in his pocket for the time being. "While waiting," Entwistle said, "a puff of wind blew a loose page of an American magazine against my legs. Picking it up and casually glancing over it I saw that it was a story of an American hold-up of a bank with a sawn-off shotgun. The thought immediately flashed through my mind, 'Why not give it a go ? If I succeed it will set me on my feet; if 1 fail I might be shot down, or, at the last, I can shoot myself and end my troubles,' " Entwistle was remanded for sentence.
