LIQUOR IN SOUTH AFRICA.

OPERATION OF NEW ACT.

NO MORE CREDIT SALES.

Several important restrictions are contained in the new Liquor Act of South Africa, which came into operation on April 1. Bars and bottle stores will henceforth not open until 10 a.m. and bottle stores selling drink for off-con-sumption must record the names and addresses of purchasers. Other important provisions of the Act which have come into operation are:— No liquor can be retailed on credit; that is, consumers will no longer be permitted to sign cards. A permit must be obtained from the police for the delivery of a quantity of liquor exceeding two gallons. Drink for off-consumption must no longer be sold over bar counters. Barkeepers must provide a special department for this trade.

Hotels may not sell drink on Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas Day, except . with the mid-day and evening meals. Women may not enter bars, but may enter bottle stores for the purpose of ordering liquor or paying accounts.
