ECHO OF ALL BLACKS.
SOUTH AFRICAN REFEREES. METHODS OF APPOINTMENT. SEEKING SOLE AUTHORITY. [FROM OUR OWN PIETERMAEITZBURG, April 7. Criticism of the methods adopted by tho South African Rugby Board in connection with tho appointment of test match referees during tho All Blacks' tour was levelled by delegates to the annual meeting of tho South African Referees' Society, held at Bloemfontein on Wednesday night, March 27. All tho Union provinces and Rhodesia were represented. The discussion arose out of the hoard's action in adding the names of two referees to the list submited by the Referees' Society for tho parent body to make five nominees to b.e placed before the All Blacks' captain for their final choice. Tho question at stake, tho delegates emphasised, was the Referees' Society's status in regard to the appointment of referees for important games such as test matches.
Mr. P. Lazarus (Transvaal) and Mr. A. M. Slado (Westprn Province) expressed tho view, which was fully endorsed by the other delegates, that nominees for test match refereps should come from the Referees' Society, and be submitted direct to the visiting captain for his final choice. This, however, Mr. Slado added, was impossible under the existing constitution, which gave the Referees' Society no authority in the nomination of test match referees. After a lengthy discussion, notice of motion was given by Mr. Slade to amend tho constitution with a view to vesting the Referees' Society with the sole authority in the making of nominees for test matches. Tho existing method of appointing referees for Currie Cup fixtures was also subjected to criticism by Mr. Lazarus, who said the practice of submitting three names to the visiting teams through the Rugby Unions was unsatisfactory. In his opinion the Referees' Society should be empowered to appoint one referee foi each match, that appointment to be final. , It was decided, on Mr, Lazarus motion, to approach the Rugby unions in the Provinces with a view to securing the adoption of this practice. The new headquarters of the society for the ensuing year is Port Elizabeth,
