LOSS OF MAIL DELIVERY.
DETRIMENTAL TO THE NORTH.
THE CONVENIENCE OF A FEW.
At. a meeting as tha Whangaret Chamber of Commerce, this: week Mr.. X EL. Walker made' reference to a rumour tha.j the. Railway Department, proposed to. change- the tima-tabfe «£ ths AuckksadWhangarei: express,, an that the train,,, instead of leaving Auckland at: 81.40! a. be..* would leave: at about. LOS a-.ni. This: wouM mean much later arrival in. Whangarai.
Mr. A. R. Fenjamin said that if tha. train arrived in: Whangarei an hour and a-balf later tha business people would be deprived of tha second mail delivery* which would be detrimental,, ana. hj« thought that now was the time for the chamber 6a act.
Mr;. A- R. Crane, considered that the people further north than Whangarei were deserving of some consideration, for if the. time-table were altered northern, passengers would arrive: at their- destinations. Inter- than ever.
The president, Mr., X E. Hohnes, waa of the opinion IS&£S what was: wanted was definite: information.
According to Mr. A. W. Wellstead, of the Railway Department,, who- was p[resent at the meeting,, tha question, was only being, discussed when lia left Auckland three weeiia. ago, and he waa: unable to say whether any definite decision, concernmtr the change had oeen arrived at.. Mr. "L X Brake, thought the- Railway Department should be asked if there• was. any justification for the rumour and, tf so, tliat a. special meeting of the chamber should be called;. It would be a vary detrimental step, to tha northern people,, and also. to. Business people-, if they were, deprived of a second man delivery.. There could; not Be: very many through paasenr gars, on tha Wellington-Auckland limited express, to connect with which ha understood the Whangaret express was Being delayedl Ha did cot think that the convenience of ti -.or six persons should enter into uhs question. Of course if anything is done: ik the matter of speeding up the. train we will ha in favour of it," : added the- spe.nit.er. It was decided to write- to- the district traffic manager, Auckland, and. ask for definite information.
