SEXUAL OFFENCES.
Sir,—ln Thursday's Herald fro read of several particularly gross cases of sexual crimes against young children. In one case the accused was found guilty, but tho jury " mado a strong recommendation to mercy on account of the prisoner s youth," this much-to-bo-pitied individual being of the tender and innocent ago of 29 years, according to tho report. _A second case—even more revolting and vile —a case of a man (a " monster" would be a better word) of 62 years, who was " found guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of his age," his victim being a tender baby girl, five years of age' What are our jurymen coming to 1 This kind of thing, instea'd of helping to prevent these appalling, and all too common crimes, merely puts a premium on crime. As a woman,' a mother, and grandmother of girls, I wish to voice a strong protest. What safety have our children, if these monsters in human form arc " strongly recommended to mercy" because they are either old or young, as tho case may be ? K.L.M.C. May 9, 1929.
