PERJURY AT TRIAL.
MENTAL HOSPITAL INCIDENT. FORMER ATTENDANT GUILTY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—I'RESS association.] WELLINGTON, Friday. Tho Forirua Mental Hospital case, which resulted in an attendant, Henry Dixon Tyrer, being found guilty of assault, was recalled to-day, when the trial commenced in the 'Wellington Supreme Court, of William Worsiey, aged 26, ono of the attendants, who gave evidence for the defence, 011 a charge of having committed perjury by falsely asserting on oath that 110 had seen a light between the patient concerned in -the case and another patient 011 the day the patient received his injuries. In the course of the evidenco the Court reporter, replying to counsel, said thero was not, in the notes of Worsiey's evidenco any statement to the effect that the patient's injuries were caused by the fight. Under cross-examination Dr. Mackie, assistant-medical officer at Portrua, said that if accused had been on the "knob" and had seen two patients fighting some 70vds. away, his first duty would have been to remain there, as he was realiv in the key position in the yard. Ho had ♦o see that none of the patients escaped from the yard. If the fight was of sufficient violenco lie should have called the attention of some other attendant. After an hour's retirement the jury returned a verdict of guilty, and accused was remanded until Monday for sentence.
