CRASH INTO WHARF.

MISHAP TO A STEAMER.

NARROW ESCAPE OF CROWD

Excitement prevailed on the waterfront at Brisbane recently when the steamer Canberra crashed into and severely damaged Boundary Street Wharf. The steamer came up the river in tow of the tug Fearless. When swinging to its berth the flood tide caught the bow of the vessel and carried it swiftly in. Police on the wharf, seeing that a collision was inevitable, quickly ordered about 200 people on to the roadway. Immediately afterward the vessel struck the wharf, the force of the impact breaking three piles and smashing the wall. Several cross beams of the wharf were pushed in for 14ft. The smash occurred just where a large group of people had been standing. The prompt action of the police undoubtedly averted a serious disaster. Only, slight damage was done to the Canberra.
