BEEF PRICES MAINTAINED

VALUES FOR SHEEP IMPROVE

There was a keen demand for a smaller yarding of beef at the weekly Westficld fat stock sale yesterday and the values prevail l rig last Week were fully maintained. The quality generally war. good, extra choice ox again selling at 39s per 1001b. Sheep were yarded in less than averago numbers and found a ready sale at late quotations, although values improved in some classes. An average yarding of lambs sold for the most part at late quotations.

Prices were firm at last week's rates for calves, of which an average number was offering. There was a smaller yarding of pigs. The demand for baconers was steady, values being the same as for last week, and there was an improvement in the demand for porkers. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Hamilton, report having held its Hamilton sale yesterday. There was a medium entry of fat cattle and sheep, few etore3 being penned. Well-fatted cows sold at slightly increased rates, and fat sheep were a trifle firmer. Prices were:—Fat 6teers, £l3 15s; fat cows, £7 2s (3d to £9 12s; plain and light cows. £5 4s to £6 fis; fleshy boner cows. £4 to £4 7s tid; dairy cows at profit, £9 to £9 15s; weaner Jersey heifers, £3 2s 6d; fat wethers, £1 15s fid to £1 16s 6d. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company, Limited, and Abraham and Williams, Limited. report on the Jolinsonville sale held to-day as follows:—There was a small yard ing of sheep and lambs, and an average yarding of cattle. Owing to the butchers being short of supplies and the fact that the yarding was not up to the usual numbers, sheep and lambs were in keen demand, prices showing a firming on last week's rates. A total clearance of the cattle offered was effected at prices on a par with last sale rates. . Vealers met with keen competition. Prices were: Bullocks. £l2 17s fid to £ls 15s: vealers. £2 lis to £4 15s: wethers, 30s 3d to 3"s; ewes, 22s 9d to 25s sd; lambs, 23s 4d to 2.?s 3d.
