TARIFF ON WHEAT.
PROPOSAL IN FRANCE.
HIGHER RATE OPPOSED
Australian and N.Z. Press Association. PARIS. March
The semi-official Le Temps sharply criticises the projected efforts to increase the tariff on wheat from 55 francs per quintal to 45, and perhaps 50. The newspaper asserts that the aid the farmer will derive from the proposed measure is dubious, in view of the quantity oi stocks in the warehouses, and tho hard winter. It adds: " The solo effect would bo a.< added burden to the consumer of 250,000,000 francs (about £2,000,000), and perhaps more."
