MISHAP TO SCOW.
HAURAKI BRIDGE RAMMED. TRAFFIC DELAYED NINE HOURS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES, Sunday. The scow Kapua, owned by McCallum Bros., of Auckland, rammed the swinging span of the Hauraki Bridge at 1 a.m. to-dav, dislocating the electricaily-worked gear and causing a blockage of motor traffic for nine hours.
The vessel, which was heavily loaded with sand, was proceeding from Wharepoa to Auckland and on approaching the narrow passage through the opened bridge crashed into the undercarriage of the 200ton span. Fortunately this was locked in its open position, enabling the vessel to swing clear. A gang under Mr. A. P. Grant, resident engineer to the Public Works Department, was at -work on the damaged machinery within an hour and restored the span to its normal position at 10 a.m. to-day. Over 60 motor-cars proceeding to and from Auckland were held up, the majority making a detour via Paeroa and Netherton.
