NEW CARDINALS.
SEVEN PRESENT VACANCIES
MATTER BEFORE CONSISTORY.
CLAIM OF AUSTRALIA. Australian Press Association—United Seirvica (Received December 21. 9.35 p.m.) ROME. Dec. 21. At a meeting tllis week of the Consistory of Cardinals the question was raised of the composition of the Sacred College. Since Piuii XI. became. Pope, 30 Cardinals have been created, of whom 15 were Italian and 15 non-Italian. Now there are seven vacancies, and there may be more before ,the spring, when the Pope will, it is expected, hold a new consistory, at which Cardinals will be created. • Ireland is anxious to be represented, and the choice rests between the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. E. J. Byrne, and the Archbishop of Armagh. It is also recalled that Australia has been for 17 -years without a Cardinal, since the death of Cardinal Moran. After the splendid manifestation at the recent Eucharistic Congress in Sydney, Australia considers that she is entitled to have a Cardinal. South America, however, has only on® Cardinal in Argentina. Chile will be specially anxious, if the next consistory gives Ireland, Australia and Argentina a Cardinal each. There is room for at least two Italians, which would bring the composition of the Sacred College to 32 Italians and 36 non-Italians.
